Dozens Killed In Suicide Attack Against MOC Military Camp In Gao

Bamako, January 18, 2017 – Today, shortly before 9am, A suicide vehicle exploded inside the camp of the MOC (Mécanisme Opérationnel de Coordination) in Gao. The camp hosts elements of the Malian Armed Forces and members of the Platform and Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) who are to take part in mixed patrols, as envisaged by the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali.
 
The exact circumstances of the attack are yet to be determined. The explosion caused heavy losses. According to preliminary information,  dozens of deaths and dozens of injuries are reported among the 600 individuals hosted in the camp.
 
MINUSMA is currently is providing assistance to the wounded and has stepped up its efforts to secure Gao city.
 
MINUSMA strongly condemns this cowardly and despicable attack and extends its deepest condolences to the Government of Mali, to the parties to the Peace Agreement and to the families of the victims.
 
As intended by the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, the MOC  is responsible for planning and conducting joint patrols involving FAMa, CMA and Platform, to ensure security in northern Mali with support from MINUSMA and international forces.
 
MINUSMA reiterates its support to the peace process and hopes that those responsible for this heinous attack will be promptly identified and brought to justice.
