In accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2690, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) closed on 31 December 2023. Note to Correspondents on the launch of the UN Inquiry into the violent demonstration of 27 January 2015 in Gao, Mali

The United Nations appointed a high-level team to conduct an Inquiry into the events of 27 January in Gao, Mali, where a violent demonstration against a MINUSMA camp resulted in the death and injury of protestors.

The United Nations informed the Government of Mali of the Inquiry and received assurances of its full support.

The Inquiry, which was announced by the Secretary-General on 29 January, will be conducted by three independent experts with extensive international experience.

The Inquiry team will travel soon to Mali in order to establish, swiftly and comprehensively, the facts surrounding the demonstration.

The experts conducting the Inquiry are Mr. Bacre Waly Ndiaye of Senegal (team leader), Mr. Ralph Zacklin of the United Kingdom and Mr. Mark Kroeker of the United States.
