MINUSMA constrained to use force today in Tabankort

This afternoon, MINUSMA was constrained to use force in order to protect UN-soldiers based in Tabankort, around 200 km north of Gao. Confronted with shootings from heavy weapons in their direction, MINUSMA Peacekeepers were under imminent threat.

This reaction by MINUSMA forces is supported by the mission’s mandate, which authorizes the use of force to protect civilians, UN-staff and UN-premises in case of an attack or an imminent threat.

MINUSMA recalls the multiple efforts it has undertaken to reduce tensions and prevent further clashes. Ever since tensions began to rise on 16 January in the surroundings of Tabankort, MINUSMA has called upon all parties concerned to respect the cease-fire and to return to their initial positions in order to protect the local population. MINUSMA has had numerous contacts with the parties involved on the ground as well with the leaders of the different groups in order to avoid an escalation of the conflict.

MINUSMA wishes to indicate that prior to its reaction, warning shots were fired in the direction of the vehicle from which gunshot were fired towards MINUSMA-troops, who were present to protect the population of Tabankort. Despite these summations, the shooting continued. MINUSMA-helicopters reacted by targeting the vehicle. MINUSMA regrets the fact that its appeals and efforts to reduce tensions were neglected. MINUSMA also regrets the still ongoing fighting at the time of the releasing of this statement and reassures all parties involved that the mission remains committed to ensuring the cease-fire is respected by all parties.
