United Nations Radio in Mali

Update: The United Nations radio station in Mali, Mikado FM, officially closed on November 30, 2023.

MIKADO FM broadcasts its programs across a large part of Malian territory, with the aim of supporting Malian efforts to establish lasting peace and national reconciliation.

MIKADO FM responded to a request made by the United Nations Security Council, the Government of Mali, civil society, and the Malian population to strengthen MINUSMA's communications efforts.

MIKADO FM broadcasts programs including news bulletins, magazines, interactive debates, and music. The news covers, among other things, the activities of the United Nations and its specialized agencies.

The radio station provides information on MINUSMA's mission, its priorities and challenges, as well as the progress of its work and the peace process. Programs cover, among other things, humanitarian aid programs and social issues. MIKADO FM is a vehicle for cohesion, education, and culture, open to all voices in Mali.

The radio provides accurate and reliable information on all aspects of the peace process in Mali, including security and political developments, inter-Malian dialogue and the numerous humanitarian assistance programs implemented in the country.

The programs are broadcast mainly in French and Bambara, some, such as the daily press review or other specialized programs, in other local languages ​​(Fulani, Songhai, Arabic and Tamasheq).

The programs are broadcast from Bamako on FM via a network of stations in Timbuktu, Gao, and Mopti. The network will soon expand to other cities such as Ménaka and Kidal.

Its name is inspired by the game of Mikado: a people is stronger united in the quest for peace in Mali.

Around thirty journalists and technicians, mostly Malian, are working on the project.

The radio station will soon also be available to listen to live online.
