Closure of MINUSMA

In accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2690, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) closed on 31 December 2023. Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on attack against MINUSMA in Gao, Mali

The Secretary-General condemns the attack against a MINUSMA vehicle that killed one Nigerien peacekeeper today in Gao, Gao region. This was the second attack against MINUSMA in two days.
The Secretary-General wishes to express his sincere condolences to the Government of Niger and to the family of the victim, and commends the brave men and women serving in MINUSMA.
The Secretary-General calls on the Malian authorities to swiftly and thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice, and recalls that attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.
