SRSG STRONGLY CONDEMNS TERRORIST ATTACK IN BAMAKO

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Mali (SRSG) and Head of MINUSMA, Mr. Mongi Hamdi, condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack against a Bamako hotel during which an unknown number of civilians were killed and wounded.

Mr. Hamdi expresses his solidarity with the Government of Mali and its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured in this heinous attack.

MINUSMA supported the Malian authorities throughout the duration of the operation, and took part in action to significantly strengthen security measures on the ground. MINUSMA also set up a crisis unit to assist the wounded.

The attack took place only a day after the sixth meeting of the Comité de Suivi de l’Accord de paix in Bamako, an event attended by representatives from the Malian Government, the Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA), the Platform Group, as well as international partners.

The SRSG welcomes the joint statement of the signatories (CMA and Platform) reiterating their commitment to pursue the implementation of the Peace Agreement despite the attack.

MINUSMA remains firmly committed along these lines, at a time where significant progress is being made with the parties signatories to the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement.

MINUSMA reiterates its determination in supporting the Government of Mali and the signatories of the Peace Agreement during this crucial stage of the peace process.
