Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Mali

The Secretary-General condemns today’s attack against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional lntegrated Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), in the Gao region, killing three Bangladeshi peacekeepers and seriously injuring five others.
 
The Secretary-General conveys his condolences to the Government of Bangladesh and to the bereaved families. He wishes swift recovery to the injured.
 
The Secretary-General recalls that Security Council resolution 2374 of 5 September 2017 provides for the imposition of sanctions against entities or individuals obstructing the implementation of the peace agreement and attacking UnitedNations personnel.
 
The Secretary-General reaffirms the United Nations' determination to support efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security in Mali. He urges the Government and the signatory armed groups to expedite the implementation of the peace agreement, so as to isolate the terrorist groups and other entities benton undermining the peace and reconciliation process.
